Esther Gamberdella was born and raised in a loud Chicago neighborhood. Tiny, but rough-and-tumble, she earned herself the nickname "Schmattze", or little rag, after slamming her body against the back fence while fielding a street ball fly and giving herself a bloody nose. Esther's childhood was spent playing ball with the boys and shining the shoes of Chicago Kingpins like Al Capone. She was barely 5 feet tall when she took the mound for the Chicago Colleens in 1950, where she also batted .250. The Little Rag. Atta girl, Schmattze.
