In hopes of establishing an International League of Girls Baseball, the AAGPBL held spring training in Havana, Cuba in 1947. The Estrellas Cubanas played a number of exhibition games against girls from the AAGPBL, creating a sensation throughout Cuba and Latin America. Following training, the AAGPBL recruited seven Cuban players between 1947-1949. One of those players was pitcher Isabel “Lefty” Alvarez. Her story is incredible! Lefty suffered a series of illnesses this past year that have left her entirely wheelchair bound. The ability to get her out to various events that keep her in touch with her love of baseball and honor her legacy is crucial to her wellbeing. Her wonderful caregiver is on a mission to obtain a handicap-accessible van that will enable Lefty to leave her care facility - and even get her to THIS year’s reunion! This lil’ drawing honors Lefty and her fellow Estrellas Cubanas.
